Founding queens emerge from hibernation and build the first primary nests.
Fertilised queens gradually emerge from hibernation. They look for a sheltered site to build a primary nest.

These photos are visual references. If in doubt, keep your distance and only report the nest with a photo and location.
Small spring nest built by a founding queen. It is often located in a sheltered place: a garage, shed, carport, cornice, lean-to or roof overhang.
Larger nest, generally observed in summer and autumn. It may be located high up in a tree or hedge, on a façade, in a roof or on an elevated structure.
In winter, a visible nest is often abandoned. The absence of incoming and outgoing hornets and other activity is the main sign of inactivity. The internal combs may be visible if the nest is open.
The module automatically adjusts the areas to monitor according to the current month.
The type of nest observed provides an important indication of the stage in the life cycle and the level of vigilance required.
Small nest built in spring by a founding queen. It is often located close to the ground in a sheltered place: a garden shed, carport, eaves, outbuilding or dense hedge.
Large nest observed in summer and autumn. It may be located high up in a tree, on a façade, in a roof or sometimes in a hedge.
Quelques indices simples permettent d’estimer la phase biologique probable.
| Observation | Likely stage | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Single hornet in spring | Foundation | Fondatrice en recherche de nourriture ou d’un site de nidification. |
| Small nest in a sheltered place | Foundation / early growth | Potentially active primary nest. Early detection is a priority. |
| Va-et-vient intense | Croissance | Active colony with many workers. Do not approach the nest. |
| High activity around fruit | Reproduction | Recherche importante de sucres en fin de saison. |
| Visible nest with no activity | Declin / hiver | Old nest, generally not reused; confirm this by checking that no hornets are entering or leaving. |
