Vespa Alert Belgium
Vespa Alert Belgium is a citizen-led initiative aimed at detecting, reporting and monitoring the presence of the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina) in Belgium.
This invasive species represents a significant threat to honey bees, wild pollinators and ecological balance. Our role is to centralise reports, share information and facilitate coordination between citizens, beekeepers and the competent authorities to improve the effectiveness of interventions.
The Vespa Alert Belgium project was launched by Maxime Dartois, a soil contamination expert with a strong interest in environmental issues. Alarmed by the impact of the Asian hornet on beehives, he observed that nests were being recorded in a fragmented way, municipality by municipality, without a central database to map them and make reporting easier.
To fill this gap, he developed a single reporting platform designed to simplify nest management, support the coordination of neutralisation operations on a larger scale and offer the general public a clear point of contact.
Maxime later joined forces with several coordinators of the Vespa Hunter group to continue developing the platform in response to growing demand. Together, we work towards better management and coordination of interventions, in close collaboration with committed beekeepers and volunteers, beekeeping associations and monitoring networks focused on the Asian hornet.
We provide a simple online form to report a suspected nest.
We maintain an up-to-date map of observations and the interventions carried out.
We help people recognise the Asian hornet, distinguish it from other species and understand the right actions to take.
We forward reports to beekeepers, specialists and the competent authorities.
To report an observation, please use our online reporting form.
You can also follow the situation on the map of nests and observations.
